Distracted Driver Kills Cyclist, and More Accident-Lawyer News

It’s difficult to grasp just how dangerous texting and driving is until you hear the statistics in the United States. The Daily Helmsman reports that distracted drivers kill approximately nine people every day.

This isn’t a static number, though. Rather, it’s increasing at a dangerous rate. The stats also don’t affect all groups of people the same way.

For instance, cyclists and pedestrians are the most vulnerable to distracted drivers. People who text behind the wheel are only able to do so because they routinely look up to gauge traffic flow, but those quick glances miss smaller commuters, like people on bikes.

According to the National Center for Biotechnology, the number of cyclists killed in distracted-driving accidents increased 24 percent between 2005 and 2010. It’s important to note that these numbers don’t just concern texting; any action that causes distraction, such as eating or using dashboard controls for too long, is very dangerous.

Driver Using Cellphone Causes Car Accident With Cyclist

Currently, 49 states have some sort of texting ban in place, but that doesn’t mean drivers aren’t willing to break the law to use their smartphones on the road. In fact, a fatal car accident shocked the nation last week.

Keloland Television reports that Christopher Weber was using his phone while driving and struck a woman and her two small children. His victim, Andrea Boeve, was riding a bike with her kids in the bike trailer at the time.

Boeve died at the scene. Amazingly, her 1-year-old only suffered minor injuries. Her other child, who is 4 years old, received a punctured lung and broken rib in the car accident.

Police arrested Weber and charged him with vehicular homicide. He admitted that he was using a banking app on his phone when he struck the cyclist.

Family of Distracted Driving Victim Launches Campaign

One year ago, 18-year-old Merritt Levitan died in a Tennessee hospital after a texting driver struck her while she was riding her bike. Deseret News reports that her family has spent the past year organizing an anti-texting and driving campaign in her honor. Touting the phrase “text less, live more,” the family encourages teens to put down their cellphones while behind the wheel.
